Never underestimate the quality of pub grub. Whether it’s a burger and chips, classic fish and chips, steak and chips, mac ‘n cheese or pizza (especially the pizza), pubs always deliver on great lunch specials. Here are our favourites.

With a specials list almost as long as its menu, Blackwoods is the place to find a hearty meal at a great price. The specials include R50 chicken wings on Mondays, platters on Tuesdays, R65 600g T-bone steaks on Wednesdays, margherita pizza for just R25 on Thursdays, and steak, egg and chips for R75 on Fridays.

There’s more than just beer on offer here and if you time it correctly, you can get a great deal. From Wednesdays to Sundays, starting at 11am, you can enjoy a burger and selected beer (or glass of house wine) for R99.

At Bossa, Mondays are all about burgers and you can have yours for just R59. On Tuesdays you’ll want to go for a mushroom melt sirloin or a chicken schnitzel for R98.

Ernie Els’s venture into the hospitality industry is welcomed by all, especially when there are great specials to take advantage of. These include a two-course power lunch, plus a beverage, for R175 per person. The deal is available from Mondays to Fridays, 12pm to 3pm

In addition to the half-chicken specials you’ll find here on a Wednesday, The Lookout also has a roast lunch from 12pm every Sunday. For R95 you’ll get to enjoy a freshly baked Yorkshire pudding with pork, beef, spinach, butternut and roast potatoes with gravy. Yum!

Barristers’s status as one of Cape Town’s most well-known and popular pubs was undoubtedly helped by its pub lunch specials that run from 11am, Mondays to Sundays. For just R70 per person, you can choose from 25 different dishes that come with a free side.

Sneaking in a lunch during your work break? Burger & Lobster not only sells a cheeseburger with chips and a soft drink for R99, but they guarantee that they’ll take less than 30 minutes to prepare it (or you get it free). The special is on offer from Mondays to Fridays, 12pm to 3pm.

Serving traditional pub fare with breathtaking views of the Groot Drakenstein Mountains, the Elephant and Barrel – named after the elephants that once roamed the area – is also a great spot for a moreish lunch for less. If you visit on a Monday, you can opt for a chicken or beef burger and chips for just R50, while on Thursdays Hawaiian and Regina pizzas are R50.
