President Cyril Ramaphosa's Cabinet Announcement: A Tainted Dawn

President Cyril Ramaphosa's announced his cabinet at the Union Buildings. Since the release of the election results, there has been great expectation that Ramaphosa would meet his the promise to not only reduce the size of the executive but also ensure that he has a quality team, with a good balanace in terms of gender and a generational mix. 

The delay in ANC deputy president David Mabuza's swearing in as a member of Parliment created widespread speculation about who would be the deputy president of South Africa. Moreover, it further exposed the compliexities of ANC's internal dynamics. 

According to the President's spokesperson, the 45 minute delay was caused by the president's need to make final calls to those who made it to his cabinent 

The number of cabinet member has been reduced from 36 to 28 ministers through combining the various departments.

Trade and Industry combined with economic development. Higher education and training is combined with science and technology.

Enviromental Affairs is combined with forestry and fisheries. Agriculture has been combined with  land reform and rural development.



Mineral resources combined with waste and sanitation. Sports has been combined with arts and culture.

The President stated that "a reconfigured state is an ideal" He further said that " we are on a journey"

As expected the President appointed David Mabuza as his deputy president. The president awarded some of his key suuperters such as Jackson Mthembu as Minister in the Presidency and Zizi Kodwa was made a deputy minister of state security. The greatest surprise was that of GOOD leader,  Patricia de Lille who was appointed the minister of public works. She is cat that got the cream after her fallout with the Democratic Alliance. 

Minster of International Relations and Cooperation is now Naledi Pandor, while Lindiwe Sisulu has moved back to her former department of Human Settlement. 

The new dawn has been questioned by the return of David Mahlobo who was controversial figure in the Zuma administration. 

Some ministers who did not make it was Jeff Radebe, Bathabile Dlamini and  Derek Hanekom.
