By Joburg Post

It’s been 50 years since the first hilux pick-ups arrived in south africa. half a century and eight generations later, it’s worked its way firmly into our hearts and is considered mzansi’s most loved bakkie.

1ST GENERATION

The basic 1.5-litre short wheelbase model was an attractive alternative to the larger Australian and American pick-ups. Within months of the first units going on sale, the Hilux was the pick-up of choice in South Africa.

2ND GENERATION

In 1973 the second generation Hilux was introduced in SA. The range provided a choice of four models either powered by a 1.6 litre or a
2.0 litre engine.

3RD GENERATION

In 1979, the choice widened further with buyers able to choose from a range of seven derivatives. Two ‘firsts’ included a 4x4 model and a 2.2-litre diesel engine.

4TH GENERATION

In 1984, Hilux was the first double cab 4x4 to be offered locally. Family recreational users could now enjoy the versatility of a light pick-up.

6TH GENERATION

After 21 years in the market, the luxury specification Raider models were introduced to the range, positioning Hilux as a true multi-purpose vehicle.

7TH GENERATION

The seventh-generation Hilux was
a milestone series for South Africa, as it gave rise to the Fortuner as well as the Hilux Dakar campaign.

2016-PRESENT

The eighth-generation Hilux made its debut and the brand’s status as our favourite all-terrain, all- purpose tougher-er vehicle remains unchallenged. It was voted ‘Best Commercial Vehicle’ in The Star Readers’ Choice 2018, while the double cab version was named the best pre- owned car in its segment. The Hilux recorded average sales of more than 3 000 units a month for 2018.
