What are your favorite things to do in Joburg and why?

I enjoy doing things that make my son happy. He loves the outdoors and animals. So together we like going to:

 1) The Lion Park.  The new Lion Park is a treasure and must see. It’s great for kids and has lovely restaurants for adults.

2) The zoo (Haartebeespoort dam / Johannesburg / Rietfontein zoo).

3) The Honeydew mazes

4) Bird park at Monte Casino

Who are two most favorite Joburg residents for you and Why?

My little guy and my Father. Family is numero uno for me. My son is a vivacious and entertaining. My dad is a bowl of wisdom. I enjoy listening to him, he inspires me and speaks life. His balance between intellect and street smarts fascinates me.

What’s your earliest memory of the city?

 1) When I was little, every last day of the month AKA payday my mom used to take me downtown Joburg. My lunch time treat was Captain Dorego’s Fish & Chips. We would sit at the park and eat till it became late.

2) The first few times I went downtown by myself. On one occasion I met up with a friend at Carlton Center. I had just been bitten by the acting bug and fell in love with African American cinema. We watched Malcom  X at Ster Kinekor.

What is your favourite iconic feature about the city?

The Market Theatre. The first time I went was on a school trip. Incidentally my aunt happened to be in a play at the theatre, at the time. The second time my dad took me and a friend to go watch Sarafina.

What makes the city special for you?

It has a rich history, good and bad. Yet it keeps thriving and has grown tremendously over the years .

What is a must do and see in the City?

The Top of Africa (Carlton Centre).

What is the most underrated place in the city for you? A hidden gem?

The Jo’burg zoo. In my opinion it should carry the same weight as the Bronx zoo. There’s is also the Military History Museum next to the zoo, which boasts some fascinating military aircraft.

Its neighborhood and surrounding suburbs  are beautiful Parkwood, Parkhurst, Houghton. My grandmother worked for a Mister Venter who lived in  the neighborhood . The first time I ever saw a mansion was when I went to work with her once. I never imagined a person of colour could ever own a house there let alone walk its streets freely.
