By Joburg Post

As one of the school’s that played a leading role in the June 16, Soweto Uprising, Morris Isaacson High is Soweto’s heritage school that remains iconic, as this is where High school student leader Tsietsi Mashinini lead the Soweto uprising which began in Soweto and spread throughout South Africa.

AYANDA ZETHU - RCL Treasurer at Morris Isaacson High School and Senior learner.

What does youth day mean to you?

It means a lot to us not only to me, but us as a school; because the people who fought and died during the Soweto Uprising were not fighting for themselves but for all of us, as the youth of South Africa.

Every generation has their struggle what are the struggles of the youth today?

We are facing drug issues and self-respect issues and those are the things that we have to deal with as young people and fight for their fall.

MPHO KHUMALO    ABRAM KGALIF   LEBOGANG    KOPANO MOLLO (Senior Learners)

Did the youth of 1976 fight in vain, why? (Mpho)

No, they fought a winning battle because now we are no longer oppressed in school by having to learn in Afrikaans; we can now learn in any preferred language.

What did the youth of 76 possess that the youth of today lack? (Abram)

The youth of 76 was different from the youth of today, the youth of 76 knew what they were fighting for to better their future. But the youth of today has nothing to fight for, we are privileged with resources and opportunity but we still want to lives that are driven by drugs, alcohol and all these things that do not bring success.

How should June 16 be celebrated? (Lebogang and Kopano)

In ways just as they did in the past, such as marching and fighting for causes such as drug abuse.

It should be celebrated such that we remember the fallen heroes such as Tsietsi Mashinini.

By marching from here to FNB stadium, I march because I reflect on the struggle that the youth of 76 and what they did for us as the youth of today.
