My Joburg Special: Lesley Mofokeng

By Joburg Post

Q: What  is your favourite hangout spot in joburg and why?

A: I find the energy, sense of community and the excitement in the air in Alexandra captivating. I enjoy visiting township and sampling the finest cuisines from different restaurants there such as Grandiose in Wynberg and Happy in East Bank.

Q: What are your favourite things to do in joburg ?

A: I enjoy taking my children out to theme parks such as Gold Reef City and exploring other family friendly spots throughout the city. Their wide-eyed wonder helps me rediscover the magic that adulthood has robbed me of.

Q:  Who are two most favourite Joburg residents for you  and why?

First up is my late pastor Reverend Sam Buti who was a struggle hero in his own right, working side by side with Beyers Naude. He formed the Save Alexandra Campaign and led many protests against the evils of apartheid and I think his story is not told enough. My second favourite residents are the selfless men and women who have opened up their doors to care for the orphaned, the aged, the sick and the destitute. Often times they are nameless and faceless heroes that are not celebrated.

Q:  What's your earliest memory of the city?

I remember how going to town with my mother was an occasion as a child. We'd dress up and get on a taxi to spend the day at Carlton Centre. I loved the smell of new clothes, new furniture or even popcorn at Cine Entertainment Centre. There was so much buzz and a stampede to cross the robots that got my adrenaline rushing.

Q:  What's your favourite iconic feature about the city ?

I can never get used to the beauty of Emoyeni Conference Centre. It's perched up on a hill near Charlotte Maxeke Hospital and have the most spectacular views of the northern suburbs. Wait until the jacarandas are in full bloom and see how the man made forest becomes an ocean of purple for as far as the eye can see.

Q:  What makes the city special for you ?

It's a place of dreams, survival of the fittest, and everyday you wake up to see if you're fit enough to survive the jungle - that pushes me to always do and give my best, because there is always someone next in line to do what I do, and they may even be better than I am.

Q: What is  a must do and see in the Joburg?

You must go visit Apartheid Museum. You must go see the markets on the weekends from Neighbourgoods to Rosebank Flea Market and Maboneng. You must visit downtown, there are some pleasant surprises in terms of places to see and things to do.

Q:  What's the most underrated place in the city ? Your hidden gem .

It's a restaurant in Marshall Town (cnr Loveday and Frederick) called Anka's Kitchen. They sell the best homemade meals at reasonable prices. It's a place I discovered only recently and I don't mind driving across town to buy from their African soul food cuisine
