A few days ago I got to attend the opening day of South African Fashion Week (SAFW A/W17). What a vibe! By the end of the evening I was smiling all the way home, thinking to myself that our creative future as a country is very bright..
Some of the collections that caught my attention were:
Etsa She played around with voluminous shapes in a very simple colour palette of grey, black and white. Her designs were quite simple in pretty basic fabrics making them look refined. I also like the interesting use of textures with animal hide, wool and bull denim. Her statement items were big pants and skirts teamed up with cropped knit tops.
Sheila Madge From the moment the first model went down the ramp, I got the sense that the designer had fun putting the mini collection together! It was fun, quirky and bright. Her interesting print-mixture with a touch of retro was striking. Her statement items were a cape with handprints, tops with interesting woollen tassels and a beaded bomber
Lumin They kept it all-black and minimalistic. Well- constructed and properly styled, their pieces were modern yet timeless. Mostly 'ordinary' pieces but matched interestingly, proving that styling plays a pivotal role for any fashion show. I could see a lot of people I know wearing their pieces, which is a brilliant thing for any brand. Even though they kept their collection dim and dark, it was plain to see that this duo has a very bright future ahead of them! They were the winners for evening.
Clive Rundle Then there was Clive Rundle! This genius has been in the industry for decades and he reminded us all why he has staying power. His collection was so organic and flexible, the wearer could wear all his items in any way they wished to. Lots of loose ties, draping and multi-functional layers. I later spoke to Sheldon Kopman, who styled the collection, and he told me that Clive didn't purchase any new fabric for the range, he used fabrics he's had in his studio over the years. Sheer genius! I'm obsessed with his striped cowl shirt; I haven't stopped fantasizing about it since!
